Hana Japan

Here's a place I seldom write about, but I love it: Hana Japan. Look at these photos - this is what they gave me to eat today (although I only tried one hunk of the roll thingie).

Those pork ribs (Hana Japan Ribs) were so tender I just plucked the meat off the bone with chopsticks. The photo (my camera sucks) does not do them justice.

The roll was developed especially for Newburyport, for party platters or groups. They are working on a special & unique Newburyport roll.

The salad and the Inari baskets won't be on the menu for a couple of weeks, but let me tell you ... YUMMY! The sushi is excellent as well; nice big pieces.
They have a Sunday buffet (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) - $15.45 for adults, $7.45 for kids over 3, and anyone younger gets to eat for free. In the Port Plaza, by the way, West Shops (where the Mexican place used to be, I gather).

This is in Newburyport? Where? Why have I never heard of it?

It in Port Plaza where Bucky's Burritos used to be.

They don't advertise enough.

The sushi is good.

Dick! I wrote a big story about the place for the Current, last fall ... I think the DN has largely ignored the place.

It's in Port Plaza, the West Shops (closest to Low St.). It's open Tues.-Sat., 11:30-9 and Sunday 11-3, as I said. From 2:30-5 p.m., I think they only offer pre-packed food, but it would have been prepared and packed that same day.

I found the tempura also to be excellent, from a previous visit.

Anon, the executive chef told me today they don't advertise at all! I talked him into it, at least a little.

Although I gather from what he said that they have a healthy dinner & buffet crowd, lunch is lagging behind. That's why they are introducing new lunch items, like the Inari baskets and the Japanese salads (the salad has cold somen noodles under the lettuce, btw. I just realized you can't tell that from the bad photo.)

Yeah, I've ordered take-out a few times. I wasn't a fan of their sushi but the chicken teriyaki platter is OK.

What specifically didn't you like about the sushi, if I may ask? I've had sushi all over the place, and with the exception of this Chinese/Japanese joint I went to in NYC, it is at least as good as any I've had.

Just curious.

Well, since the Current refuses to deliver to my street, and the two boxes at The Tannery are empty by late Friday afternoon (and are never refilled), I rarely read it.

I have found little reason to go to Port Plaza (except for the shoe store), so maybe this will be an attraction.

Hey Dick, I was just joshing anyway! The Current, or their delivery people, stopped delivering to the Island about 2 yrs. ago.

I actually don't go to Hana Japan as much as I'd like because I also have little reason to go to Port Plaza.

That's kind of sad, actually.

Gillian, I don't recall. Maybe I should try again.

Dick, you can always find copies of the Current stashed in the library's 1st floor reading room.
