Comment from Everett re: landfill

Thought this deserved to stand on its own, as well as being a comment to a post:

FYI

Attorney Anthony Rossi, Mr Thibeault's attorney, just stated at The City of Everett's Alderman's meeting that if Newburyport votes against the increased trucking, the state will step in and override your Council's vote.

I think both of our communities are screwed.

Gillian,

What are our State reps saying about our predicament with NV?

Hopefully the Newburyport council will vote no on the new trucking deal, regardless of whether the State overrides that decision.

At least then it will be on record that the City was against the new deal. Then when NV doesn't live up to the new agreement (as history suggests will happen), no one at the State level can deflect he blame by telling Newburyport "You voted for this."

Regards.

The secrecy surrounding this whole is unfortunate.

It seems that so far NV has run legal circles around our city. If the deal were open to the public, I am sure that some of the more legally inclined minds in our city would help make sure that we aren't agreeing to another bad deal.

I would think that that the more eyeballs looking at this the better.

Government should be open. Good things generally don't happen in secret meetings.

Anonymous #1 - I'm not sure about the state reps. They are being strangely silent on this. But I'm not sure that anyone has asked them.

Anonymous #2 - I agree, totally.

Attorney Rossi also told the Everett Aldermen tonight, that your vote on the increase trucking in Newburyport was taking place tonight. Is that true?

No, not true. I mean, it did not.

When you consider the number of Newburyport and Everett residents who view any sort of online blog or forum is slim compared to the whole, would anything be accomplished by either 1) a letter to the editor that is sent to both cities' newspapers and/or 2) a bi-community forum?

People are calling for regionalization and collaboration, so how about everyone trying to work together and not just post messages back and forth that are seen by 1% of the whole?

From reading your blog, I get the impression your meeting last night was a budget hearing. Do I have that correct? Was the landfill increase trucking even on an agenda for last night? It seems Attorney Rossi was not quite accurate in his presentation to Everett city government last night.

Why am I not surprised!

Ari, Sounds like a plan to me! You set it up.

Anonymous, there was a budget hearing, yes, but there was also a Consent Agenda and business as usual before the hearing. The landfill trucking was not on the agenda. I'm not entirely sure that it should not have been ... anyone out there have any thoughts on whether the City Council can just drop an item w/out putting it in a committee?

Bueller? Anyone?

Dear Blogger Jillian,

Once again I sit astounded and in terror of the operation both of government and the well-meaning but ill-informed citizenry.

Surely those who recently purchased abodes noticed the large hill of garbage near their homes? And surely everyone is in agreement that perhaps we are suffering from a great need to put our trash somewhere? Where else would it go? Foist it off on a community such as Haverhill? Use it as fill on the rapidly-submerging island of Plum Island? Burn it and receive the smoke and fumes? Send it, as your used cellphones and computer waste is sent, to a Third World nation for children to play with the mercury and then become brain-damaged terrorists?

And surely we are all realizing that the city of Everett was founded by criminal elements, and while we in Newburyport argue about bike lanes, Stephen Karp (truly, Allah has blessed him!) and other petty things the criminal Everett people have maintained a sharper edge?

And surely we are all aware that the industry of trash disposal has it's roots within the system of organized crime, which lead to a complete understanding of the legal system, in which case the average garbageman has the legal knowledge of the great attorney Johnny Cochran?

Surely we can argue back and forth like drunken Chinese ping-pong players, but the reality is that there is a huge pile of stuff that has to be managed, and pigs to eat the garbage are out of the question because all Americans are fearful of natural odors.

Even I with my national school training in the arts of Information Technology can see that there is an ultimate paradox at work here. You make the trash but you do not want to keep the trash, bury the trash or burn the trash.

In this year's election, my first as a fully-fledge American citizen, I will vote for the person who has the solution to the trash situation.

P.S. I recommend that you eat at the fine Mr India establishment. Even though there is a natural nuclear-tipped hatred between the Indian fools and the citizens of my homeland of Pakistan, the food was most excellent and I kept a sharp eye on the waiters in case of shenanigans.

I went there after my night class in English Composition, which I am taking in the vain hope of becoming a skilled writer such as yourself in order to document my fine and not-so-fine experiences in America on the fine Match.Com site, as eHarmony is full of racists who rejected my application.

I agree that Mr. India is a fine establishment. Not sure about your other points - but the pig idea appeals to me for some reason (although I don't think they like C&D fines).
