The man who ran down two Newburyport teens in 2003 while driving drunk, killing one of them, and who served only about three years for it is going back to jail.
William White was yesterday sentenced to 5-7 years for violating his probation, under which he was not supposed to drink for 5 years. He was last week seen, and reported for, drinking a beer at a restaurant in Seabrook, NH, a scant few miles from Newburyport.
Judge David Lowy sentenced White Tuesday morning in Salem Superior Court after White was caught having a beer at the Seabrook '99' Restaurant, a violation of his five-year probation for motor vehicle homicide after hitting two Newburyport High students while driving drunk in 2003. Trista Zinck, 16, died as a result of her injuries, while her boyfriend, Neil Bornstein, still deals with his injuries today.
At his probation hearing last Wednesday, Lowy said the act made a "mockery" of his sentence by drinking. Lowy reiterated that as he sentenced White Tuesday morning.
"Sadly the defendant took a person's life and caused the other harm," Lowy said. "The fact Mr. White even had a drink, that alcohol ever touched his lips, indicates he just doesn't get it."
Amen to that.
