Just in, from Ron Klodenski:
The landfill owner has received permission from the Newburyport Health Department to begin receiving truckloads of asphalt grindings at the Crow Lane landfill on Monday (5/19). Dave Madden, the city's representative, will be on site.
I believe this material is the old paving material they remove from roads before repaving them.
To start doing this, the landfill owner had to fulfill several conditions, including payment of some funds due the city. As I understand, this approval does not permit him to start bringing in demolition waste.
The demolition waste is what the city says is responsible for the hydrogen sulfide gas, released as the gypsum in the construction material rots. The gas, as city residents know, stinks.
I haven't seen any recent complaints come through due to the stench, however. The gas extraction wells are working (and apparently have not been recently shut off in retaliation by the owner).
Still no word, it seems, from the DEP about the agreement they came to with New Ventures, the company that owns the landfill.
