Random thoughts

This is what Jeanne's looked like when it was Atty. May's (owned by attorney May Chiklis).

I gather that it was a popular spot that sold food and ice cream to beachgoers.

Jeanne's is open only sporadically and is/was rather "pricey."

This lends itself to a question: is it better to have vacant buildings (on which the property owners are paying taxes), or occupied buildings with thriving businesses?

Three commercial buildings that Jeanne Geiger bought on Plum Island before her untimely death in Feb. 2005 all sit underused or vacant. Atty. May's "Beachcoma" has been empty for, what, 3 years now. (Read the Feb. 27, 2005, Globe article about Geiger's death and possible repercussions here.)

Likewise the former PJ's, a popular breakfast and gathering spot.

The only restaurant, per se, left on Plum Island is the Plum Island Grille, which is only open Thurs.-Sun. off-season. It is an upscale sort of place.

Mad Martha's Beach Cafe, a funky sort of place further up Northern Blvd., is only open until 2 p.m.

And - since I started this post nearly 2 hrs. ago and have since been on the phone, I've lost my train of thought. But I'll leave this as is and click "publish post" anyway.

Parting thought: this is not a panacea - so stay away!
