Harborwalk

Tonight a City Council Committee-of-the-Whole will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the harborwalk ordinance.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in council chambers, according to the city calendar. The city's website sucks ... now it's telling me that I don't have permission to view the calendar.

I was told by a reliable source that the DEP license granted the city states the "dawn to dusk" and "no fishing" rules.

I have not verified this with Geordie Vining (planning office) - he's out of the office - but I have no reason to believe this is not the case.

Also I guess the "no fishing" is all about the part of the walk that directly relates to the Rivers Edge condos. The city's boardwalk is going to go over part of the private marina & all that good stuff.

There's a back story to all this as well, of course having to do with people ignoring their DEP license and then allowing "concessions" to the city.

And I still have heard nada about the money I believe is owed to the sewer dept. by ratepayers. Unpaid bills. The mayor hinted at it in a conversation we had about people who weren't paying their property taxes.

Good thing we have the state to bail us out when we need wads of cash, huh? I wonder where all that money comes from ...

The Committee of the Whole agreed with the Harborwalk Ordinance as it was published, with a few minor tweaks.

After listening to the various speakers, I agree with it. It appears there are a few fisher folk who are so obnoxious, they screw it up for the many who are not. Folks had pictures of some of the messes they have left behind.

As much as I hate to see walking on the new boardwalk restricted by hours, there are not going to be lights on it, so it will not be safe after dark. And, again, a few drunks cause enough trouble that restricting it seems sensible.

It's going to be a great addition to the city, so a few minor restrictions won't put much of a damper on it.

Thanks for the update, Dick. I meant to attend but then I fell asleep on the couch. Journalism at its best, huh?

Mr. Monahan's thoughtful comments acurately reflect the substance and tenor of the meeting. Everyone who participated was respectful and even in area of minor disagreement were most polite.
