Bob Lobster in a groove

I was naughty and went to Bob Lobster for fish & chips yesterday.

The last 2 times I've been in there, there have been literally hoards of people there. That's good!

My only complaint is, you seem to get less fish in the fish & chips these days. I used to get 2 meals out of one order a year ago.

That, I hear, is how restaurants are dealing with the economic crunch - not by raising prices drastically, but by reducing portions.

That being said, it's still damn tasty fish & chips. And why should I expect to get 2 meals anyway?

Since we moved here 4 years ago, we've walked past the Rockfish and checked out the menu on the wall a number of times. It always seemed to be just a couple of oddball things. As a result, we've never been there.

We checked again tonight. The menu showed a large number of choices, many of which looked good. So, we went in.

The hostess asked us if we wanted to sit in the bar on the first floor, or "upstairs". We chose the latter. It turned out to be a nice, quiet room on the third floor.

We had the mahi mahi and the salmon. Both were outstanding.

We'll certainly be back.

Dick, I haven't been there since I worked on State St., but I used to go there for lunch. Predictably, I always got the same thing: the haddock sandwich (I think it also has crab on it). Very good. I don't know why I haven't been back! Thanks.

Sadly, I know the menu by heart at the Rockfish. Give their fish & chips a try there, too. Quite good.

I haven't yet been to Bob Lobster, though, so I'm curious to try it there. Do they have clam strips? It could be dangerous if you say yes...

Mary, I gathered that from all the photos you take there! I'll check out the fish & chips. BL has clams, but I'm not sure if they're strips or bellies ... I love fried clams, but I've never tried them there.

Where is Jim's located, usually? Clams can be so "iffy." I tend to only get them at a place where I've been told they're good, such as Kelley's at Revere Beach, Turner's in Melorose, or Capt. Hook's in Gloucester.

The best clam strips I've had were at good ol' Maddie's back when we lived in Marblehead. Really light, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

And, yes, maybe the insanely stiff drinks helped with the positive review. Maybe.
