A reader sent me these (undated) photos of Newburyport Harbor in the hopes that someone out there in "Blog World" knows when sail powered freighters stopped making deliveries to Newburyport. (click on images to enlarge)
Hi G.- former Flintite here-are these boats colliers? Grand Banks Fishers? Know what the buildings in the background are? The ships are all tri-masted, but I can't clearly see the rigging, or all of the decks. my 1st guess would be cod fishermen, then colliers. Have You shown the photos to anyone at Mystic? Sliante! bustdup
Thanks, bustdup. Could definitely be either. Not clippers? I have a book with a 'front' view of the large building right on the water in the bottom photo. Looks like it says PHIL ADEL BAIT on it ... think the buildings were mostly shipyards, warehouses and the Custom House (still here)
I ended up in Newburyport, Mass. due to the restless nature of a previous employer, who has since decamped the area. Private comments and concerns can be sent to me at gillianswart@gmail.com.
