More info on "yeat" and other NBPT slang

From NBPTMA.com, which I didn't know existed until someone earlier sent me an email.

Slang of the Day

Newburyport Youngster Slang of the Day

Bubbtown- the less desirable parts of Newburyport
Bubba- One who lives in the less than desirable parts of town. (Me: Yikes!)
Wiggy- A more precise term for a bubbtown resident.
Ya’ Bubba- What you say to get the attention of a Bubba.
Yeat - My interpretation is :a friendly go away or up yours attitude. Lets debate this. What is your definition?
I go to the Tech - That is Whittier Vo-Tech.

General Slang

The Mall - Sometimes the Mall you shop at, but sometimes the Bartlet Mall (Frog Pond).

There are people commenting who claim that "yeat" is at least also a Byfield term. Note that the word is classified as "youngster slang."

I can see the angry comments forming now ... Ya' Bubba, do you have any input?

When I was young (60s-70s), the Mall (Frog Pond) was pronounced , the Mal (rhymes with Cal) .... only original Newburyporters know that .....

Yeah, I was wondering who wrote that, who didn't know that's how you're supposed to pronounce it ...

Bubba said...

Oui, J'ai mal à la tête.

A headache?

Bubba said...

Yes, we were talking about "the mal".

The townie debate always gives me a large Bartlet Mall à la tête.

Ah, I see. Didn't get it before; got it now ... very clever. I couldn't figure out why you were telling me you had a headache ...

anonymous here again .... from the 60's, we used to call people from seabrook "brookers" .... they were considered a lower form of life and should not be allowed in newburyport, even though newburyport was a dump back then ... we used to see them at cashman park all of the time .... by the way, cashman park was not safe after dark becuase of all of the drinking and drugs that occured down there ...the baseball fields were great during the day but watch out after dark ... things have improved dramatically....

The pronunciation of mall to rhyme with pal is the way Londoners pronounce The Mall, which is the wide street leading from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace.

And, BTW, the cigarette (is it still sold?) was pronounced that way, too. I believe it was named after another London street, Pall Mall, which runs parallel to The Mall.

That's "Brookas", son. They aspired to Slime St.

okee dokee, anon2 ... your anonymous wish is my command.

Or not.

Probably not. Someone else is sending me more info on "yeat."

i have to agree with anon2, not a good way to ingratiate yourself with locals...

It wasn't me that brought it up in the first place! It was that woman, at the gathering on Sunday, in a public place.

I really don't get this at all. There is a group on Facebook called "Yeat Irregulars" and there is even a local firm with a name that includes "yeat."

And this is a link to a YouTube video with an "original" song called "Yeat-da-bun." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_aqN6r6854Please tell me, what's the big deal? It's not like I use the word ... if someone can explain to me (it can be in private) what the big deal is ... in any case, I was done with the topic after the headache discussion with Bubba.

You anonymous people are the ones who kept it going.

The "Good Old Days" were certainly interesting, but not all that good in a lot of ways.
