According to the Daily News, Congressman John Tierney has announced that the Army Corps of Engineers has secured $100,000 to study the erosion at the Newbury town beach.
This, of course, is what the guy from Woods Hole recommended when I talked to him a couple of months ago: Study first, lobbyist, if necessary, second.
More interesting was the comment from a member of the public (the DN now allows people to comment, on line, on each story - shades of the Current?). In part, the person says
"It is perplexing that the federal government has enough sense to not allow people to destroy the fore dune area in the refuge, yet the Town of Newbury doesn't."
The southern part of Plum Island is owned by the federal government, except for the extreme southern end, which is a state park. People are not allowed to walk on the dunes in the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The government has built wooden walkways through the dunes out to the beach, in selected locations.
If I could find my backup CD burned when my old laptop was slowly losing its pixels, I would post shots I have taken of the beach as it is in the refuge. It's beautiful, almost beyond belief, especially when you're the only person around.
