Chico's nixes Newburyport

Just in case you didn't see this on Tom Salemi's blog, here's the latest on Chico's (not) coming to town, courtesy of the Daily News - or, in this case, the Week Old News. I think I noted on here last weekend that there was a "For Lease" sign on the door of the proposed location.

(Sorry, couldn't resist ... I'm sure I'll pay for that somewhere down the road.)

Anyway, Chico's is a purveyor of women's clothing and accessories and it caused quite a buzz here when everyone thought yet another chain store was moving in. For those readers who do not live here (and I know there are a few), there are many people who do not think formula/chain businesses belong in our fair city, which is sort of known for the small, boutique-y type of shop. I mean any more than the ones that are already here - Starbuck's, Dunkin' Donuts, Talbot's, Not Your Average Joe's, to name the ones that immediately come to mind.

A group of people under the banner "Buy Local"/supportNBPT.org organized and drafted an ordinance for City Council review that would have limited the number of chain/formula stores that could set up in Newburyport to 10.

The ordinance died at the end of the last session of the City Council and it doesn't look like it's being given any resusitation in this session.

I have heard many times the wish, and I wish it could be true as well, that we could have a good old fashioned five and dime-type store downtown. They don't exist anymore, but wasn't it great to have somewhere (downtown) to shop, especially in a clutch, where you knew you could find almost anything?

Richdale does its best, but it only has so much space.
