Shut it down

OK, so I'm sitting here today and I'm seeing all kinds of emails about the landfill - children sick, parent losing a day of work to stay home with sick children, grandparents having to send sick grandchild home because of stench ...

See what "secret" deals get you? This is one thing secret deals can get you - a lawsuit.

And as much as I feel for the people who are trying to save the White Hen Pantry and the people sending a fire truck to Guatemala and all the other stuff people are rallying behind, where is the compassion for the residents of this city who are and have been inhaling hydrogen sulfide, day in and day out for weeks now?

This is text from an email sent out by Brian Derrivan within the hour:

I have a call into Commissioner Burt’s office and just got off the phone with John Carrigan from the DEP. He has assured me that they are working diligently with Shaw and NV to try and control the breakouts that have been out of control for the past few weeks.

If it's freaking out of control, then someone should shut the operation down, don't you think?

I mean, come on. They don't have control over the situation and they don't know what is causing the burnt odors people are complaining about ... SHUT IT DOWN.

Because the people saving White Hen benefit at the expense of NED whereas their getting involved with the landfill would benefit others at their expense.

Good point.

I heard people are burning smoke pits in their yards to cover up the smell of the landfill. And that could the burnt odor people are smelling!

me again , I agree the landfill should be shut down until the odor is under control!

I can't speak for everyone, but two thoughts.

Most people are drawn to act when their own interests are at stake. For example, I wonder how many Plum Island folks are writing letters about the landfill.

Second, rightly or wrongly, people have entrusted the management of the landfill issue to their public officials whereas White Hen is an issue outside the public realm.

Tom,

Given that most Plum Islanders live in Newbury, I'm not sure I'd expect them to get involved in a Newburyport issue.

FYI

and there comments capping a landfill I find interesting. Perhaps Newburyport can hire these lawyers.

Bubba,

Most, but not all....

But I'm sure you get my larger point.

People have gone to meetings for the landfill that do not live in NBPT! Some people are very concerned about the landfill as it hurt everyone in the long run! People living on PI do have shop for food and Shaw and MB has smelled from the odor a # of x ! And people on PI do have kids that go to school , so it it crazy to say the landfill should be only the concerns of people living near it!
Seabrook is not MASS,but we have alarms here to warn us of a melt down! The landfill is the whole city issues not just the people living near it!
