Gillian, I'll bet you a Mr India biryani (if I win, it's going to be very, very hot) that at least one more house goes before the beach replenishment takes place.

Carrot, I think I would lose that bet (although I do love a Mr. India biryani). Unfortunately, I think the house most in jeopardy right now, from the photos and my eyes, belongs to someone I know. Right near where that other house was pulled down.

Here's the deal: Mother Nature bats last. Always has, always will. The beach replenishment project only delays the inevitable, and not for very long, either.

I've been accused of "hating" Plum Island when I've pointed this out numerous times in the past. I'm not enamored of what it's become over the past decade or so; I miss the BeachComber, and Ms Greenhead, and the half-assed parade.

anon/Carrot,

I agree with you about what Plum Island has become over the last decade but, more than that, I have little sympathy for people who construct monstruous trophy houses on postage stamp lots on what has`ALWAYS been a fragile, ever shifting barrier island, and then expect their fellow tax payers to bail them out.

I fel sorry for their predicament, to be sure, but many of the new wash ashores obviously knew nothing about PI and its history with Neptune.

I think many of them bought the late Jeanne Geiger's delusion that PI was destined to be the next Martha's Vineyard.

With ocean temps rising and more intense storms becoming the norm, I'm sure the island will breach within the next several years and, over the next decade or two, many of those new trophy houses will end up in the drink. It's, unfortunately, inevitable.

Mac,

"the late Jeanne Geiger's delusion that PI was destined to be the next Martha's Vineyard."

A prime example of selling the sizzle and not the steak. Delusion is the exact right word to use.
