What does "yeat" mean?

According to Ralph Ayers, it was a common question in Newburyport: "Did y'eat?"

Translation: "Did you eat?"

That got a lot of laughs at today's Together conversation between Ayers and Dick Cunningham - and one loud protest of "That's not what it means!".

It was a fun presentation ... and interesting.

Also it was taped for local access cable, so keep an eye out.

(Actually, according to the urban dictionary, "yeat" is how men on ships identified fellow Newburyporters on other ships. Now it just means whatever the person who said it means, I guess.)

Yeat I tell you, yeat.
